The NHS COVID-19 app is a key part of NHS Test and Trace and continues to play an important role in suppressing the virus as we head into winter – the app remains the fastest and simplest way to know if you have been exposed to Covid-19 and to also alert others if you test positive.

The app is able to anonymously alert you if you’ve been in close contact with a positive case of Covid-19 or if you have visited a venue on the same day as others who have since tested positive. This is increasingly important now because coronavirus restrictions have eased, and as many people are now socialising more and in larger groups.

The Government strongly encourages everyone, even those who are fully vaccinated, to continue using the app. The majority of people will not be advised to self-isolate if they have received an alert by the app, but it is still important they know that they have been a close contact of someone with coronavirus, so that they can get tested and adjust their behaviour accordingly.

The app will also help the NHS understand if the virus is spreading in a particular area, and so local authorities can respond quickly to stop it spreading further and save lives. The app does this while protecting a user’s anonymity. Nobody, including the government, will know who or where a particular user is.
